MIGRAINE MEDICATIONS
Migraines affect several individuals everyday and can be severely debilitating in some, more extreme, cases. There are several types of medication that are available to individuals experiencing migraines. This medication can often reduce the frequency of occurrences and the severity of the symptoms that are associated with the migraine. Such medications include both OTC, or over the counter medications, and prescription medications. Most migraine medication that is prescribed is stronger than what can be purchased over the counter. These types of medication are often for those individuals who are experiencing more frequent or severe migraines.
Prescription migraine medications that are commonly prescribed include: Amitriptyline, Propranolol, topirmate, toradol, sumatriptan, Cataflam, and Valproic Acid. These medications are the best at combating not only the pain but the prevention of the migraine and its other symptoms. OTC drugs can also be helpful to an extent; aspirin. Naproxen, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen have all been used in helping the individual decrease the pain associated with migraines.
Those OTC drugs may be able to relieve the pain of a migraine for a short period of time but these drugs are strictly for use in those mild to moderate migraines. They can be dependable for pain relief for a short period of time but, for the extended experience, a prescription drug is often found more effective.
Cataflam is an NSAID combination drug of diclofenac-potassium and is often faster acting than some other drugs. It can also help to curb feelings of nausea in the individual. However, this drug is not recommended for use in those individuals with bleeding disorders or those with allergies to aspirin.
Ketorolac can be used for injection to allow a quicker action in the body. It is often much more effective for migraines than opioids, as well as a few other commonly prescribed drugs, in the treatment of later stage migraines that cause more severe attacks.
